Goal/ Mission Statement:
TO PROVIDE AN EXEMPLARY TUTORIAL PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES ONE THROUGH EIGHT (1-8) IN THE CENTRAL BROOKLYN COMMUNITY TO HELP OUR YOUTH BECOME SUCCESSFUL AND PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS IN A CHANGING, DIVERSE AND TECHNOLOGICAL WORLD.
|
 |
Overview:
The Tutorial Program was created by the Education Committee of the CBC Support Services Corporation, a.k.a. Cornerstone Support Services (“the Board”) in the Fall 2005. The Board wanted to expand its footprint in the community via a secular tutorial program to replace the then-present church-focused youth programs for young men and young women, “Sons of Man’ and Pearls of the Word” respectively.
The Tutorial Program will run during the school year and will meet once a week, on Thursday afternoons, from late Fall to early Spring each year. The Session = Tutorial Program’s semester/school year will be from October to April. The Session will generally run from late October through early April each year in the Cornerstone Baptist Church Building (until a permanent Board facility is established). The hours of operation will be from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for students and a later time 3:15 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. for faculty and administration.
The Tutorial Program’s objectives have expanded based upon feedback received from participants to give educational support to youth in the community from grades two (2) to eight (8). It Tutorial Program originally intended to assist youth in our community in the target grades of three (3) through eight (8) in preparing for the standardized New York State Reading (January) and Mathematics (March) Tests for grades 3-8 and overall educational support/enrichment.
All students must have the following on file:
- A signed parental/guardian consents form to participate in the Tutorial Program.
- A signed parental/guardian and student agreement form regarding understanding and acceptance of the rules prohibiting excessive, unexcused tardiness (arrival after 3:30 p.m.-3:45 p.m.) or unexcused late parental/guardian pick-up for release of students at dismissal time (pick-up after 5:30 p.m.)
- A completed and signed emergency contact form.
Criteria of faculty: Our primary goal is to enlist volunteer educators in good standing that are New York State certified teachers or provisional teachers who are currently employed too teach in New York City, Long Island or upstate New York. While no unlicensed substitute teachers will be sought or accepted, recently retired teachers (within the past decade, preferably within the past two to five years) will be accepted. All faculty members must submit and have on file a reference letter from her/his principal or assistant principal indicating that the teacher is:
- New York State certified;
- A current employee or recent retiree of the New York public school system;
- Is qualified to teach the designated subject area(s) in the Tutorial Program.
Faculty should have experience with our target grade range 2nd-8th grades, and must be willing to commit to the Session’s schedule. Interviews of all faculty (and the paid Administrator to be hired in the future) will be conducted by the Education Committee and/or the entire Board.
All faculty and administrators must have a completed and signed agreement form regarding their general fitness as well as their enthusiastic and punctual commitment to complete the Tutorial Program Session on file. They will note that failure to complete the Session causes faculty to forfeit their small stipend at the end of the Session and may preclude them from the Tutorial Program in the future.
Additional qualities of all faculty and administrators should include: be flexible, a team-player, committed/dedicated, pleasant, enjoys working with children, compassionate, patient, sensitive to the needs of children, creative, resourceful, ethical, healthy values and respectful.

Writing and listening skills will be strengthened through the varied reading, listening and writing activities.
Students in grades 2-8 will receive weekly small group instruction in Mathematics. This instruction will focus on the mathematical problem solving skills and mathematical concepts.
Students will master the mathematical problem solving skills through the various activities which focus on problems solving strategies.
Students will engage in activities by using mathematical manipulatives and other mathematics materials to solve problems.
Test sophistication skills will be enhanced as test taking strategies are taught.
Students will develop an ongoing appreciation of all genres of literature by borrowing books from our library on a regular basis.
A specific segment of time is devoted to homework assistance, based upon the needs of the enrolled students. During this time, teachers can evaluate the students’ performance in school, assist with homework and remain aware of current topics being taught in school.
Instruction will focus on integrating technology into the curriculum areas of reading and mathematics as students work in the Board’s Technology Lab.
Staff members have observed an improvement in the students’ performance at the end of each yearly session.
A nutritious snack and healthy beverage is served during each session to each participant.
Outcomes:
The Education Committee and Board have received excellent feedback from our students, staff and parents. Some of our students have been participating since our program started in 2006. Parents and students would like for us to increase the number of days for the Tutorial Program. Parents have told us how the students’ teachers have seen an improvement since they have been participating in our program. Parents indicated that they have seen their children begin to read more books and have noticed an improved attitude about reading and mathematics after attending our program. Our teachers are highly motivated and enjoy working with our children.
The Education Committee hopes to expand the Tutorial Program to service students in High School and increase the number of days in the future. However, expansion of the Tutorial Program depends upon increased resources available and increased availability of appropriate and quality faculty and administrative staff.
