Health and Wellness issues are a major concern of our community, thus we take this seriously and are in the process of creating a Health Committee to address barriers that prevent our residents from seeing a health care provider.

Since many community residents lack access to healthcare, many health related issues go untreated. Some of the major issues facing our community are hypertension, diabetes, obesity, mental health issues and heart disease. In Central Brooklyn 32% of adults were told by a healthcare professional that they have high blood pressure and one quarter were told they have high cholesterol (NYC Community Heath Survey, 2002, NYCDOHMH). Both of these conditions can lead to heart disease which affects many of our residents.

In addition, we are also concerned with the rising STD/HIV rates among our young adults. Our Health Committee is prepared to serve as a resource for our residents by providing health related workshops, creating a directory of healthcare services in the area to assist residents in identifying a healthcare provider. By taking preventive measures such as exercise, proper nutrition, and having annual check-ups some of the major health issues affecting our committee will be reduced.
